Etymology and characteristics#

Slacker rock was initially intertwined with “slacker” culture which emerged in the 1980s and 1990s amongst Generation X, with its association with a specific cultural attitude being primarily popularized by director Richard Linklater’s 1990 cult film, Slacker. The term “slacker” described a teenager that showcased a nonchalant attitude and general blasé approach to life. Slacker rock became musically reflective of slacker culture, employing less emphasis on technical proficiency and production quality, in favor of stripped down lo-fi aesthetics and an apathetic singing style.

Slovenian-style polka

Instruments#

The Slovenian style polka band always includes a piano accordion, chromatic accordion, or the Diatonic button accordion (also called a “button box”). An accordion called the Half Chromatic, often abbreviated half-chrom, is sometimes used. This accordion has a right side similar to a three-row B-system chromatic accordion, but a bass side similar to the Diatonic button accordion. Some bands in Slovenia use keyboard instead of accordion. The other melody instrument is a saxophone or clarinet, and the rhythm instruments include drums, bass, and guitar or banjo. The Avsenik brothers also add a trumpet to their sound. The Slovenian style polka in the United States came about when immigrants from Slovenia taught the old songs to their children. Those children, as adults, translated the old songs from Slovene into English, and arranged them in a polka beat. This began the oral tradition of Cleveland-style polka music.

Slow jam

In radio#

In 1983, Kevin “Slow Jammin’” James created the radio show Slow Jam on WKYS, named after the Midnight Star song, then later the Weekend Slow Jam show. In 1994, R Dub! created the radio show Sunday Night Slow Jams on Power 1490 KJYK in Tucson, AZ. Today, Sunday Night Slow Jams can be heard on over 200 radio stations in 17 countries. In 2024, the mayors of San Diego, California and Tucson, Arizona proclaimed the date of June 21 to be “Slow Jams Day”, honoring the debut broadcast of Sunday Night Slow Jams with R Dub!.

Slowcore

Characteristics#

Slowcore prominently incorporates stylings and traits from indie rock and contemporary folk music. Similarly, contemporary folk refers to a musical style representative of traditional folk music but with modernthe 20th century and onwardsinterpretations, ultimately spawning subgenres like folk rock and indie folk in the later stages of the century, both of which influenced slowcore to different extents. Americana, Drone and ambient music are also cited as being similar. There is no definitive characterisation of the genre, Backing instrumentation is sparse, contrasting with the genres from which slowcore is derived. Slowcore uses simple melodies over a prolonged period to evoke saddening emotions; Andrea Swensson of Pitchfork wrote that the genre “gently pulls the listener out of linear time”. While the songs can implement choruses, they often lack intense changes in instrumentation. Chris Brokaw of Codeine facetiously remarked that he could “play a snare hit, go get a drink and be back at the drumkit before the next beat”. Lyrics in slowcore songs are often melancholic, with the vocal performances subdued. Emotion is a core component of slowcore, and the sparse instrumentation emphasises the singer’s voice. Stuart Braithwaite, a founding member of the renowned post-rock band Mogwai, said “You weren’t going to play slowcore at parties, but it was beautiful: the lyrics bare and honest, the musicality sparing”.

Sludge metal

Characteristics#

Alex Deller of Metal Hammer describes sludge metal as a “mutant cousin to both doom and stoner metal”, incorporating the “misery of the former and the prodigious narcotic consumption of the latter while spewing nihilism, self loathing and frenzied punk rock aggression into the vomitous mix.” He also described the style as “arguably the biggest, ugliest mutt” of the extreme metal subgenres. The key characteristics of sludge metal are a slow tempo combined with down-tuned, heavily distorted guitars. Many sludge bands also make use of elements of industrial music, southern rock Drug addiction is a common theme, while discussion of poverty and pollution are also prevalent. Sludge bands who lean more towards hardcore are sometimes called sludgecore by music historians including Garry Sharpe-Young and David Pearson. New Orleans is the birthplace of the sludgecore movement, with Eyehategod being this style’s frontrunner.
