Benjamín Gutiérrez (born January 3, 1937, in Guadalupe, Costa Rica) is a celebrated composer in Costa Rica. He is a conductor, composer, and pianist. Gutiérrez began by studying music with his grandmother, Rosa Jiménez Nuñez, daughter of the composer Pilar Jiménez.” Gutiérrez then studied music in Guatemala City, Boston, Ann Arbor, Aspen, and Buenos Aires. The following were among his teachers: Ross Lee Finney, Darius Milhaud, and Alberto Ginastera. Gutiérrez has written music for piano, orchestra, violin, viola, clarinet, flute, saxophone, trombone quartet, bassoon quartet, marimba, opera, and several other instruments. Early years Benjamín Gutiérrez was born into a musical family outside of San José; they all played instruments. Gutiérrez’s father was an amateur violinist who owned a shoe factory. His mother, Lupita Sáenz Jiménez-Núñez, played the piano. Gutiérrez’s grandmother recommended that he join the Conservatorio de Música in San José. Brunilda de Portilla (2 June 1929 – 9 July 2025) was a Costa Rican educator and composer. Life and career De Portilla was born as Brunilda Rodríguez Martínez, to Nicaraguan parents in La Cruz on 2 June 1929. After graduating in 1947, she enrolled at the University of Costa Rica, where she was part of the University Theater, performing various productions of works by Miguel de Cervantes, Alejandro Casona and Henrik Ibsen. In 1953, de Portilla married Roberto Portilla Ibarra, with whom she had three children. De Portilla was a primary school teacher in different institutions in Guanacaste. She began teaching science, Spanish, history, mathematics, plastic arts, and physical education in the public schools of Guadalupe, Sabanilla and Desamparados. She also took the opportunity to form choirs with his students and teach them various compositions. De Portilla recorded some of the songs she had composed in later years; most of them with a love theme and a Christmas carol. Daniel Rojas (born 1988) Rojas studied Jazz Arranging & Composition at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, on scholarship. After graduating in 2010, he moved full-time into session player work, primarily as a guitarist. His film and television work has included working as an assistant composer, arranger, and music team member for composers such as Hans Zimmer, Klaus Badelt, and Alan Menken. Rojas also performed as a member of Demi Lovato’s band, and Downsizing (2017), directed by Alexander Payne and starring Matt Damon. Television composition work has included scores for The Demon Files featuring Sean Astin (2015, Destination America), and True Nightmares featuring Tim Robbins (2015–2018, Investigation Discovery). Currently, Rojas is the series composer for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, a DreamWorks Animation television series. He composes both score music and songs for the series, which stars the voices of Karen Fukuhara, Deon Cole, Coy Stewart, Sydney Mikayla, and Dee Bradley Baker. José René Villafuerte Flores (born 26 January 1997), known as René Villa, is a Costa Rican singer-songwriter, model and actor, based in Ireland. Biography René Villa was born on 26 January 1997 in Nicoya. As a child, Villa was heavily into Carlos Rivera, Luis Fonsi, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey. Especially Carey influenced his music style, to bring different types of music together. Throughout his career, René has worked with Costa Rican musician and producer Alan Shepard, as well as Nelss, Carlox, among countless others. As a solo artist, he has released two albums and EPs that defy category, traversing intimate singer songwriter, pop, Latin pop, pop rock, electronic and dance. René submitted the first songs he ever wrote, and found himself making his debut with “Dónde Estás”, under the name of Shory Flores. Before changing his artist name, the songs were released by his old names, including “Juntos (Al Amanecer)” and “Te Quiero (Pa’ Mi)”. Rocío Sanz Quirós (1934–1993) was a Costa Rican composer. She was born in Costa Rica and completed her music education in California and at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. She lived and worked in Mexico after 1953. Works Sanz Quirós composed chamber music and orchestral works and also for plays and ballets. Her best known work is Cantata de la Independencia.
