About the Sheet Music Maker
The Sheet Music Maker is a free online sheet music creator and music score maker that runs in your web browser, with no sign-up. You can write a melody, a song with chords and lyrics, or a two-hand piano part, see it engraved as standard notation, hear it played back, then print it, download it as MIDI, or copy the ABC text.
The page opens with a short original four-bar exercise, “My First Melody”, already on the staff. Press Play to hear it, then change the title, key, time signature, or tempo, and add your own notes. Nothing you enter is uploaded, and the current score is saved in your browser as you work.
How to use the Sheet Music Maker
- Set up the score at the top. Type a Title (it shows “Untitled” if empty) and a Composer or subtitle. Then choose the Staff (Treble clef, Bass clef, or Grand staff), the Key, the Time signature, and the Tempo (20 to 300 BPM).
- Pick a note length with the Length buttons: Whole (key 1), Half (2), Quarter (3), Eighth (4), 16th (5), or 32nd (6).
- Turn on Dotted, Rest, Sharp, Flat, or Natural if you need them.
- Click a key on the piano keyboard to add a note. Clicking the empty staff does not add notes.
- On a Grand staff, press “Right hand (treble)” or “Left hand (bass)” before you add notes.
- Click a note on the staff to select it. Use Up a step, Down a step, Longer, Shorter, Dot, Tie, or Delete. Type a chord symbol in the “Chord symbol above this note” box.
- Type lyrics in the Lyrics box, one syllable per note.
- Press Play to hear the score. Press Stop to end it.
- Press Print, Download MIDI, or Copy link when you are finished.
You can also use the keyboard. Letters A to G enter notes, and Space plays or stops. Ctrl or Cmd+Z undoes a change. Printing gives a black-on-white page with only the sheet.
How do I make sheet music online for free?#
Open the page, set the title, key, time signature, and tempo, then enter your notes. When the score is ready, print it or download it. The tool is free and runs in the browser, so there is no music notation software to install.
The time signature sets how much fits in each bar: the bottom number names a note value and the top number says how many of them fill the bar. In 4/4, a bar holds four quarter notes; in 6/8, six eighth notes. A half note lasts two beats, a whole note lasts four, and a dotted note adds half of its own value.
How do I enter notes with the computer keyboard?#
Press A to G to enter a note. The tool picks the octave closest to the previous note, so you rarely need to set it by hand. Press 1 to 6 to set the length, and use Up and Down to move the last note by an octave (Shift plus Up or Down moves it one step).
New notes are inserted at the cursor. The orange-highlighted note is the one before the cursor. Use Left and Right to move the cursor, and Backspace or Delete to remove the note before or after it. Press #, -, or = before a note to add a sharp, flat, or natural. These apply to the next note only.
How do I write piano music for two hands (grand staff)?#
Choose Grand staff. The top staff is the right hand, in treble clef, and the bottom staff is the left hand, in bass clef. Press the “Right hand” or “Left hand” button to choose which staff gets the next notes. This makes the page a simple piano sheet creator online.
Each hand is a separate line of notes. The tool does not place notes that sound together on one staff, so put the chord notes for the left hand on the bottom staff. Chord symbols and lyrics belong to the right hand. When one hand is shorter, the tool pads it with invisible rests.
Why is a note split and tied across the bar line?#
A bar has a fixed length set by the time signature. If a note is too long for the space left in the bar, it is split at the bar line into two notes joined by a tie. For example, a half note that starts on beat 4 of 4/4 becomes a quarter note tied to a quarter note in the next bar.
The tool stores this as one note. The split is only how it is drawn. A rest is split into two rests with no tie. If the last bar is not full, the status line tells you how many beats are missing, and “Fill bar with rests” completes it.
What is ABC notation and how do I keep editing my score later?#
ABC notation is plain text that describes a score. The starting exercise is written as "C"C8 D8 E8 F8 | G16 E8 C8 | "G7"D4E4 F4D4 G16 | "C"C32 |], with the lyric on its own line. The ABC text panel lets you copy this text, save it as a .abc file, or paste text and press “Load this text” to open it.
Loading can be undone. The tool may simplify some content it cannot hold, such as chords reduced to their top note, and it will say so under the score. The current score also saves in your browser automatically, 0.4 seconds after each change, and “Copy link” puts the whole score into the page address.
How do I print the sheet or download a MIDI file?#
Print produces a white page with black ink and only the sheet: the title, composer line, tempo mark, and all systems, with about four bars per line. Long scores break between lines. Download MIDI saves a standard MIDI file (type 1) with the tempo, time signature, key signature, and title. The file name comes from the title, or “untitled.mid” if there is none.
In a grand staff score, the right hand is on channel 1 and the left hand is on channel 2, as separate tracks. Tied notes become one long MIDI note.
