Quick answer

A full piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black, from A0 (key 1) at the left to C8 (key 88) at the right. The white keys are named with the letters A to G, repeating every octave; the black keys come in groups of two and three and are named by the white key beside them with a sharp (♯) or a flat (♭). Middle C is C4, key 40: the white key just left of the group of two black keys nearest the middle. The keyboard below shows every key with its name and octave number; choose the labels you want, click a key to hear it, and print it.

Names follow scientific pitch notation (middle C = C4); key numbers count from A0 = 1, so MIDI note number = key number + 20. A4 = key 49 = 440 Hz. musictheoryprint.com/charts/piano-keyboard-labeled

How the piano keyboard is laid out#

The keys repeat in groups of twelve: seven white keys (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) and five black keys, which are split into a group of two and a group of three. Find a group of two black keys; the white key just to the left of the pair is C. Every white key then follows from C in alphabetical order: C D E F G A B, then C again an octave higher.

A black key has two names because it sits between two white keys. It is the sharp of the white key to its left and the flat of the white key to its right: the black key between C and D is C♯ or D♭. Which name is used depends on the key of the music. Notes with the same pitch and different names are called enharmonic.

Octave numbers and middle C#

The numbers after the letters come from scientific pitch notation. An octave starts on C, so the number rises at each C: B3 is followed by C4. Middle C is C4, the C nearest the middle of an 88-key piano, key number 40 (the fourth C from the left). The lowest key is A0 (key 1) and the highest is C8 (key 88). A4, the A above middle C, is key 49 and is tuned to 440 Hz in standard concert pitch.

Key numbers 1 to 88#

Counting from the lowest key, A0 is 1 and C8 is 88. Key numbers are convenient when talking about a particular key, and they relate directly to the MIDI note numbers used by electronic keyboards: MIDI number = key number + 20 (middle C is key 40 and MIDI note 60). The note frequency calculator gives the frequency of every key.

Questions#

How many keys does a piano have?#

A standard modern piano has 88 keys: 52 white and 36 black, spanning seven octaves plus a minor third, from A0 to C8. Many digital keyboards have fewer keys; 61 keys (C2 to C6) is a common size.

Where is middle C on the keyboard?#

Middle C is the C closest to the centre of an 88-key keyboard. It is the white key just to the left of the group of two black keys that is nearest the middle, and it is written C4. On the staff it sits on the first ledger line below the treble clef and the first ledger line above the bass clef.

Why are the notes of a black key written two ways?#

A black key is a sharp of the white note below it and a flat of the white note above it. Both names describe the same key; the music’s key signature decides which is used. For example the same black key is F♯ in G major and G♭ in D♭ major.

What are the solfège names for the piano keys?#

In fixed-do solfège, C is Do, D is Re, E is Mi, F is Fa, G is Sol, A is La and B is Si, whatever the key. Sharps and flats keep the syllable and add the sign (C♯ is Do♯). English-speaking teachers using movable do often say Ti instead of Si, but there the syllables follow the key rather than fixed keys, so this chart uses fixed do.

Which piano key is which note: how do I memorise them?#

Learn the two-black-key group (C D E sit around it, C on the left and E on the right), then the three-black-key group (F G A B). Once you can find every C, count up from there. Use the click-to-hear keys to match the sound to the name.
