How to use it

- Choose a difficulty: easy shows 4 notes, medium 5, hard 6 with other-octave Cs as traps.
- Press New worksheet; circle the note you think is middle C.
- Check the numbered answer key on page 2.
What this worksheet practises#
Middle C is the landmark that links the treble and bass clefs, and it is written differently in each clef. Each question shows a numbered row of notes; exactly one is middle C and you circle it.
How the levels differ#
- Easy: four notes. The other notes are inside the staff, so in treble, bass and grand staff middle C is the only note on a ledger line. In alto clef it is on the middle line.
- Medium: five notes, with up to two ledger lines for the other notes, so ledger notes compete with middle C.
- Hard: six notes. The row always includes another C in a different octave, and sharps and flats appear, so you need to look at the exact position.
Notes never share the same line or space as middle C, so there is one correct answer.
What to look for#
In treble clef, look for the short line under the staff, with the note hanging from it. In bass clef, the short line is above the staff. In alto clef, middle C is on the third line and the clef itself centres on it.
Other Cs are easy to confuse at a glance, so check the octave: the C above middle C is on the third space of the treble staff, and the C below middle C is on the second space of the bass staff.
