What this worksheet practises#
Minor scales come in three forms, and each one must be spelled correctly with one letter per degree. Choose one form to drill it, or mix all three. You either write the scale on an empty staff or identify a scale shown on the staff (key and form).
Methods#
- Natural minor: W-H-W-W-H-W-W. It has the key signature of its relative major.
- Harmonic minor: natural minor with the 7th degree raised a half step (W-H-W-W-H-W+H-H, where W+H is an augmented second).
- Melodic minor: ascending, the 6th and 7th are both raised (W-H-W-W-W-W-H); descending, it is natural minor. Melodic exercises are set ascending, descending, or both in one line.
What each level contains#
- Easy: minor keys with up to three sharps or flats (A, E, B, F♯, D, G, C).
- Medium: up to five (adds C♯, G♯, F, B♭). Identify exercises also include a scale with one wrong note.
- Hard: all fifteen minor keys, including D♯, A♯, E♭ and A♭, with double sharps where the spelling requires them.
Identify exercises show the scale ascending with accidentals written in; the first note is the tonic.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three forms of the minor scale?
Natural minor has the pattern W-H-W-W-H-W-W. Harmonic minor raises the 7th degree by a half step. Melodic minor raises both the 6th and 7th degrees when ascending and uses the natural minor when descending.
Why does harmonic minor have an augmented second?
Raising the 7th while the 6th stays low leaves a step of three half steps between degrees 6 and 7, for example F to G♯ in A harmonic minor. That step is an augmented second.
How is melodic minor written on the staff?
Ascending, the 6th and 7th degrees are raised (A minor: F♯ and G♯). Descending, those accidentals are cancelled and the notes are those of natural minor. The worksheet states which direction each exercise needs.
Why does G♯ harmonic minor contain F𝄪?
G♯ minor has F♯ in its key signature. The raised 7th must be a half step below the tonic, G♯, and still be spelled on the letter F, so F♯ is raised again to F double sharp (F𝄪). The hard level includes spellings like this.
Which keys appear at each level?
Easy: minor keys with up to 3 sharps or flats. Medium: up to 5. Hard: all fifteen minor keys, up to 7 sharps or flats.
