      How to use it

      1. Select a difficulty, an inversion option and the display (staff or note names).
      2. Generate a sheet and name the root and type of each seventh chord.
      3. With inversions on, also say which inversion is shown.
      4. Check with the answer key or print the answers on their own page.

      What this exercise practises#

Each question shows a four-note chord, on a staff or as note names, and asks for its root and type. With inversions switched on you also give the inversion.

      How to solve a question#

      1. Stack the notes in thirds to find the root.
      2. Measure the three intervals above the root:
        • major 7th: major 3rd, perfect 5th, major 7th (C-E-G-B)
        • dominant 7th: major 3rd, perfect 5th, minor 7th (C-E-G-B♭)
        • minor 7th: minor 3rd, perfect 5th, minor 7th (C-E♭-G-B♭)
        • half-diminished 7th: minor 3rd, diminished 5th, minor 7th (C-E♭-G♭-B♭)
        • diminished 7th: minor 3rd, diminished 5th, diminished 7th (C-E♭-G♭-B𝄫)
      3. For the inversion, check which chord note is lowest: root, third, fifth or seventh.

      Difficulty levels#

      • Easy: major 7th, dominant 7th and minor 7th chords on common roots.
      • Medium: adds half-diminished 7th chords and more sharp and flat roots. No double accidentals.
      • Hard: adds fully diminished 7th chords, every root from C♭ to B♯ and spellings with double sharps and double flats.

      Frequently asked questions

What are the five common seventh chord types?

      Major 7th (major triad + major 7th), dominant 7th (major triad + minor 7th), minor 7th (minor triad + minor 7th), half-diminished 7th (diminished triad + minor 7th) and diminished 7th (diminished triad + diminished 7th).

How do I find the root of an inverted seventh chord?

Rewrite the notes as a stack of thirds. The note at the bottom of the stack is the root. A seventh chord has four notes, so the notes are root, third, fifth and seventh.

What is the difference between half-diminished and fully diminished sevenths?

Both are built on a diminished triad. The half-diminished chord has a minor seventh above the root (written m7♭5 or ø7); the fully diminished chord has a diminished seventh, which is a minor third above the diminished fifth (written dim7 or °7).

What is the figured bass for the inversions of a seventh chord?

Root position 7, first inversion 6/5, second inversion 4/3 and third inversion 4/2.

Why are there no triads on this sheet?

Every question is a four-note seventh chord. For triads use the triad identification worksheet.
