About the Whole and Half Steps Worksheet

This Whole and Half Steps Worksheet makes printable practice sheets on the distances between notes. Each sheet shows notes on a staff and asks you to label whole steps (W) and half steps (H), judge note pairs, name step patterns or build scales. It runs in your web browser. The difficulty and number of questions can be changed, so the same tool suits a first lesson on half steps and whole steps on piano or a harder review of music theory. It is free, nothing you enter is uploaded, and every sheet comes with an answer key on page 2.

How to use the Whole and Half Steps Worksheet

      1. Open the Exercise menu and choose what to practise: Label the steps in a scale, Whole or half step between two notes, Step patterns, Build a scale from a pattern, or Mixed (the default).
      2. Open the Clef menu and choose Treble clef or Bass clef (treble is the default).
      3. Set the Difficulty menu to easy, medium or hard.
      4. Set the Questions menu to 10 or 20.
      5. Write W for a whole step and H for a half step between each pair of neighbouring notes.
      6. Press Show answers to check your work. The explanation lists every step.
      7. Press New worksheet for a fresh set of scales, or press Print when you are ready to work on paper.

Every sheet has a number (Sheet #). The page address keeps your settings and that number (the part after ?seed=), so you can reopen or share the same sheet later.

The fastest way to learn from this worksheet is to start on easy, count semitones, and keep the sheet number so you can return to the same questions. Set Difficulty to easy and Exercise to “Whole or half step between two notes” to practise the basics first.

Count semitones between neighbouring notes: one semitone is H, and two semitones is W. The only natural half steps are E to F and B to C, so every other neighbouring pair of white keys is a whole step.

What is a half step and a whole step?#

A half step (also called a semitone) is the distance between two neighbouring keys on a piano, black or white. A whole step (also called a tone) is two half steps. On the piano, E to F and B to C are half steps, and every other pair of neighbouring white keys is a whole step.

Counting works the same way on the staff. One semitone is H, and two semitones is W. Because the natural half steps are E-F and B-C, you can check any pair of natural notes against those two gaps.

What is the whole and half step pattern of a major scale?#

The major scale follows the pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H. Natural minor is W-H-W-W-H-W-W, harmonic minor is W-H-W-W-H-W+H-H, and ascending melodic minor is W-H-W-W-W-W-H. Scales are built from whole and half steps, so knowing the pattern lets you spell any scale without memorising it.

Do two neighbouring notes always make a whole or half step?#

Usually, but accidentals change the result. E to F is a half step, but E♯ to F is no step at all, and E to F♯ is a whole step. The pair exercises only use combinations that give a whole or half step.

How do you build a scale from a pattern?#

Take the next letter name for each step first, then add the sharp or flat that gives the required step. For example, a major scale starting on G uses the pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H. The letters are G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, so the F needs a sharp to make E to F♯ a whole step and F♯ to G a half step. The result is G A B C D E F♯ G.

Where are the half steps on a piano keyboard?#

A half step is the distance between two neighbouring keys on a piano, whether they are white or black. On the white keys, the natural half steps are E to F and B to C, because no black key sits between them.

Every other pair of neighbouring white keys has a black key in between, so each of those pairs is a whole step (two half steps). For example, C to D is a whole step, with C-sharp in the middle.

To find a half step on the keyboard:

      1. Choose a starting key.
      2. Move to the very next key, going up (right) or down (left). Count black keys too.
      3. If you land on the next key with nothing in between, you have moved a half step.

      Frequently asked questions

Is it free and does it need an account?

Yes, it is free and runs in your web browser with no sign-up. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

Can I print it with the answers?

Yes. Printing gives page 1 with the questions and page 2 with the answer key. A4 and US Letter paper both work.

Which scales appear at each level?

Easy uses major and natural minor scales. Medium adds harmonic minor and notes with a single sharp or flat. Hard adds ascending melodic minor and the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian modes.

      What does W+H mean?

W+H is a step of three half steps, also called an augmented second. It appears between the 6th and 7th degrees of harmonic minor, and the worksheet writes it this way.

Can I give a whole class the same worksheet?

Yes. Every sheet has a number, and the page URL keeps your settings and that number (?seed=…), so anyone who opens the same link gets the same sheet and answer key. Set your options, press Print for the questions on page 1 and the answers on page 2, or share the link with your class.

How do I get a different sheet with the same settings?

Press New worksheet to get a different sheet with the same settings. The tool creates a new sheet with a new number and keeps your Difficulty, Questions, Exercise and Clef choices. The page URL keeps your settings and the sheet number, so you can reopen or share a sheet later.
