How to use it
- Choose a difficulty, an inversion option and a clef.
- Generate a sheet: each question names a seventh chord and gives an empty staff.
- Write the four notes with the right accidentals and the requested lowest note.
- Compare with the answer staves or print the answer page.
What this exercise practises#
You write a named seventh chord, such as D♭ major 7th chord in second inversion, on an empty staff. It trains spelling in thirds, the five seventh-chord types and the position of each chord note in an inversion.
How to solve a question#
- Spell the triad on the root with consecutive thirds (letter names skipping one each time).
- Add the seventh, a third above the fifth, and choose its accidental from the type:
- major 7th: a major seventh above the root
- dominant 7th, minor 7th and half-diminished 7th: a minor seventh
- diminished 7th: a diminished seventh
- Adjust the third and fifth to the type (see the identification worksheet for the full interval list).
- For an inversion, move the notes below the requested bass note up an octave: one note for first inversion, two for second, three for third.
Difficulty levels#
- Easy: major 7th, dominant 7th and minor 7th chords on common roots.
- Medium: adds half-diminished 7th chords and roots with a sharp or flat, without double accidentals.
- Hard: adds diminished 7th chords and every root from C♭ to B♯, with double sharps and double flats where the spelling requires them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I build a seventh chord?
Spell a triad on the root, then add the seventh: stack another third above the fifth. Choose the accidentals to match the chord type, for example dominant 7th = major triad + minor seventh.
What notes are in a dominant 7th chord on G?
G-B-D-F. It is the V7 chord of C major.
How do I write a seventh chord in third inversion?
Put the seventh in the bass: for G7 that is F at the bottom with G, B and D above (figured bass 4/2).
What is the difference between Cm7♭5 and Cdim7?
Cm7♭5 (half-diminished) is C-E♭-G♭-B♭. Cdim7 (fully diminished) is C-E♭-G♭-B𝄫; its seventh is one semitone lower.
Do I need a key signature?
No. The chords are written with accidentals and no key signature.
